Dear Sir,
I write in regards to Bill Howatson’s article Rise in farm deaths shows HSE is right to drive home message (The Scotsman, Monday July 12).
As the summer harvest starts soon, it is essential for farm operators make use of the guidance available to them to protect themselves and their workers. Sadly many of these deaths are the result of poor safety preparation and operating systems.
It is crucial that farmers conduct proper and documented risk assessments for each human role and that these are communicated to all staff, with translations for foreign workers.
Farm operators should consider implementing a tailored health and safety programme for their farm. The HSE has a good and informative internet site to assist with this, with templates and guidance notes.
Agriculture will always contain an element of danger but every opportunity should be taken to limit the risks and protect human life.
Yours faithfully,
Colin Clark
