Moving Tips

Moving homes is one of life’s most stressful experiences.

Scotland’s leading legal, financial and property specialists Pagan Osborne has dealt with thousands of harassed families in its 250 years of business. Below, property services director Matthew Gray spells out a few ways to streamline the process.

He said: “On a personal, as well as professional level, we understand how much of an upheaval it is moving home. There is no getting away from this completely. However, there are a few things you can do to make it all go a bit smoother, giving you more time to relax and enjoy your new home.”

1. Tell people you are moving and on what day. Key contacts include utilities providers, Inland Revenue, neighbours, doctors, dentists and schools. Sit down and make a list of all the people that you can think of that have your details and might need to contact you. Most importantly, remember to redirect the mail.

2. Check before moving day if you need to dismantle furniture. Wardrobes and beds that were purchased flat packed and assembled inside may not move in one piece. If you are not ready for the removal van, you might have to pay extra.

3. Have white goods disconnected in advance if they are moving with you. Some removal firms are unable to unplumb washing machines and dishwashers and most cannot disconnect gas or electric cookers. Remember to turn services off at the mains.

4. Incorrect, incomplete, or total lack of packing is a common complaint from removal companies. Don't forget to empty and pack the contents of the loft, shed or basement in advance of the day. Always label your removal boxes and the rooms you want the boxes to be moved into otherwise you will have no idea what is in the boxes and that will cause for mayhem at the other side.

5. Mark up a box of essentials and reserve for the kettle, tea and coffee, milk and disposable cups and biscuits. This box could also include a screwdriver, hammer and Allen key which will inevitably be needed at some point and could easily get lost.
