Fife’s leading legal, financial and property specialists Pagan Osborne has enjoyed over 250 years in business. A walk down memory lane offers up a chance to re-evaluate lessons learned and explore how the company can use that immense history to look ahead to the next 250 years.
The legal services company has its roots in North East Fife and retains a strong Kingdom presence today with offices and property shops in Cupar, Anstruther and St Andrews, as well as an office and property shop in Edinburgh.
Chief Executive Alistair Morris joined Pagan Osborne as a trainee solicitor 30 years ago. He is proud of the history but knows that in a dynamic and ever-changing legal, economic and social landscape that being innovative has long been the key to this familiar Fife service’s success. He said:
“I am proud to play my part in Pagan Osborne’s history. Over more than 250 years, we have existed in various guises and key themes running throughout this time have been reliability and innovation. These are strong qualities across the company, ensuring we know when and how to change to meet the needs and demands of our clients in the most effective, efficient and relevant way.”
Pagan Osborne began its story as CS & CLP Grace in St Andrews in the 1750s. In the late nineteenth century, the firm became known as Pagan Osborne & Grace before becoming Pagan Osborne in 1994.
In 2010, it changed its status from a legal partnership to a limited company in order to meet the changing demands on the modern marketplace, so it could be more flexible and appoint a wide range of non-legal expertise to its management board.
Along the way, Pagan Osborne pioneered the creation of property centres becoming the first solicitors in Scotland to open a dedicated property shop in 1976 and embraced investment services long before its competitors.
“Our clients can have faith in the fact we have solid historical roots but also that we move with the times. We have survived this long because we are a progressive company that cares about providing the very best levels of service to each new generation of our clients. When it's you and your family's futures at stake, knowing that the people looking after your most important affairs have been trusted by the residents of Fife for centuries really makes a difference, and we will continue to deliver that peace of mind for generations to come."
