Dying Without a Will

A recent survey has revealed that almost 30m adults do not have a Will, including more than a third aged over 55.

Lianne Lodge, an associate at leading legal financial and property specialists Pagan Osborne highlights that not having a Will can have long-term and heart-wrenching implications for those you leave behind.

She said:
“A will is something many people think can be left to tomorrow. But the sad reality is, we cannot guarantee how long we have left.

“At a terrible time, a Will can at least provide some order for your friends and family in how to deal with your estate. Without it, very little is certain.

“Without a Will, there may be additional expense and time involved in winding up the estate – all of which can be easily avoided.”

Another recent survey found that inheritance is set to soar by 2050, with those over the age of 35 at the moment expecting to inherit from their parents as they assume they are sitting on valuable assets. The HSBC study found that in 2047, the average inheritance will be £238,000.

Lianne added:

“Without an up-to-date Will in place, it may be your estate is not distributed to your wishes. With so much at stake, why not give you and your family peace of mind and help them know they are making the right decisions on your behalf, for instance by leaving instructions for your funeral, donating to charity and sharing your estate throughout the family.

“Rather than look upon drafting a Will as a morbid task, think of it as a practical step which ensures your legacy is as you would want it to be. One of the only certainties in life is death and it is something we must all prepare for no matter our age, health or status.”

The Will research was conducted by advice group to mark National Will Week and the HSBC report is named The Age of Inheritance.
