Helping CHAS Raise Cash via Ebay

Jackie Jackson of Kirkcaldy is one of the reasons why children’s charity CHAS is raising much needed cash on ebay.

JayJay, an Executive Assistant at legal, financial and property company Pagan Osborne, volunteers every month to research items of clothes, jewellery and toys donated to the charity to assess their value. If she discovers a dress is a genuine vintage item or a toy a rarity, they are auctioned on ebay, ensuring CHAS gets the maximum price.

It is part of a new drive by the charity that is supported through the government’s gift aid system, allowing CHAS to claim back the tax on the value of assets and not just cash donations. Now for every £1 raised through gifted items, from books and CDs through to clothes and furniture, means £1.25 to the charity.

Pagan Osborne made CHAS its firm-wide charity in 2013 and that’s how JayJay got involved. Now CHAS is looking to recruit more volunteers to be part of its ebay team.

JayJay said: “I just love it.  I’m a bargain shopper anyway so find it fascinating what people throw away and I really enjoy  getting on to the internet to see  what value the goods have or are likely to attract in an online ebay auction.

“One of the items which landed on my desk was a ladies trouser suit.  After a bit of digging I found that it was a classic 80s design by Margaretha Ley, the woman behind the Escada perfume. It was beautifully made and a real 80s style with oversized shoulder pads and wide lapels. It went on ebay in the hope that either a collector or someone who just has an eye for quality, or something a bit different from the norm spots it.”

Laura Campbell, a member of the CHAS Retail Team, said: “We are always looking for keen volunteers with an eye for fashion to help us with our ebay shop. The work JayJay has done so far has been a wonderful help – she has been terrific at searching out those hidden treasures that are so kindly donated to us by the public. The ebay shop gives us an alternative outlet to try and reach buyers looking for specific fashion collectors’ items that can raise a significant amount for CHAS, and directly help children with life-shortening conditions in Scotland.”

Fiona McDonald, partner at Pagan Osborne added: “When donations are made to charity that charity can offer to act as agent for its supporters and sell goods on their behalf under the Retail Gift Aid Scheme. The proceeds can then be treated as donated to the charity and qualify for Gift Aid. The supporter must make a Gift Aid declaration for any donations made.

“This is good news for both the charity and the supporter as tax can be reclaimed by both providing the supporter has paid equivalent tax on their income. It also provides people with an even more valuable way to support charities.”
