Insuring Against Thefts

A recent report by NFU Mutual indicated that nearly £50 million of machinery and livestock had been stolen from farms in Britain in 2010. The rising price of oil has seen thefts of diesel increase. As well as the thieves’ perennial favourite quad bikes, large machinery such as tractors are also stolen, often for export.
Livestock rustling is common in some areas too. With fewer people working on farms, it is difficult to keep an eye on machinery and livestock especially at busy times. How practical is it to lock up the tool shed or machinery shed every time you go out to the field, particularly at harvest? Is the key taken out of the tractor and pickup every time it is out of sight?
While most farmers are aware of the need for increased security and will lock up sheds at night and have installed security lighting etc, opportunistic thefts take place during the day and thieves are quite brazen in doing so. Despite the practical inconveniences that result from increased security it is important that appropriate measures are taken.
Exclusion clauses in insurance policies should be checked carefully. Often they have a provision saying that “reasonable care or precautions” have to be taken. There have been many cases where insurance claims have been refused where for example a key has been left in a tractor or quad bike that has been stolen, or small tools are stolen from an unlocked shed or fuel from an unlocked tank. It adds insult to injury when a vehicle has been stolen and the insurance claim is rejected.
So, despite the inconvenience of doing so, it is important that reasonable precautions are taken to make it as difficult as possible for thieves and in the unfortunate event of a theft taking place, to make sure that your insurance claim is not rejected.
