Pagan Osborne CEO Steps up as Law Society President

Pagan Osborne’s chief executive Alistair Morris will take up the reins as President of the Law Society of Scotland from today (30th May).

Alistair has 21 years’ experience as a member of Council, the Society’s ruling body, and was on the President’s Committee and  the Society’s Board, where he  played an important part in directing the strategy of the organisation.

He said: “The ethos of the Society is to give solicitors value for money, to be relevant to the profession, approachable and accessible, and these are themes I will be carrying forward during my year as President.

“The tough economic conditions and adapting to change are issues close to my heart as chief executive of Pagan Osborne, a company employing over 100 people. I understand the challenges facing many of our members in planning, budgeting, keeping existing clients happy whilst securing new work. Whatever type of legal work and whatever size of firm, we face similar pressures. The Society can help firms to compete for the work, whether through contracted legal aid work or opening doors further afield, by working on enabling the right structures, such as alternative business structures.”

Alistair will be president when Scotland goes to the polls in the referendum on independence and during one of the largest gatherings of solicitors from across the globe – the Commonwealth Law Conference in Glasgow next April.

He added: “All eyes will be on Scotland this September and we can add a great deal to the independence referendum debate from our neutral stance. We are working on our second position paper on some of the big issues, building on the paper we published last year, which asked important questions about EU membership and the impact of independence on the economy.

“The Commonwealth Law Conference is a fantastic opportunity for Scotland and in particular Glasgow, as it hosts 1,000 solicitors from around the world.

“My predecessor Bruce Beveridge has done a brilliant job raising the profile of the profession, at home and overseas, and being president with such a spotlight on Scotland gives me a great opportunity to continue highlighting the work of Scottish solicitors.”
