Pagan Osborne urges donors to maximise donations with Gift Aid

People giving to charities, should remember to take advantage of the government’s Gift Aid system, says legal, financial and property company Pagan Osborne.

Gift Aid increases the value of donations to charities by allowing them to reclaim basic rate tax on gifts. For people paying higher rate tax, extra relief can be claimed.  In order to make a Gift Aid donation, a declaration form is required, which will normally be provided by the charity concerned.

When the donations are goods rather than cash, Gift Aid does not apply.  However, charities can offer to ‘act as an agent’ for its supporters and sell goods in the hope that the owner chooses to donate the sale proceeds.  This is known as ‘Retail Gift Aid.’

Pagan Osborne Executive Assistant, Jackie Jackson has been taking advantage of this scheme.  She researches items of clothes, jewellery and toys donated the Children’s Hospice Association, Scotland (CHAS). If she discovers a dress is a genuine vintage item or a toy a rarity, they are auctioned on ebay. Using Retail Gift Aid allows CHAS to claim back the tax on the value of assets and not just cash donations. Now, for every £1 raised through gifted items, £1.25 goes to the charity.

Fiona McDonald,

Partner at Pagan Osborne, said:

Retail Gift Aid is a great way of realising the maximum amount from donated goods.  The charity will sell these goods on the donor’s behalf and then the proceeds are then treated as a cash donation – thus qualifying for Gift Aid in the usual way.

“This is good news for both the charity and the supporter as tax can be reclaimed by both providing the supporter has paid equivalent tax on their income. It also provides people with an even more valuable way to support charities.”
